Hardwired… to Self-Destruct is the tenth studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica, released as a double album on November 18, 2016 by their vanity label Blackened Recordings. It is their first studio album in eight years following Death Magnetic (2008), marking the longest gap between two studio albums in the band’s career. It is also their first studio album released through Blackened. Hardwired… to Self-Destruct was produced by Greg Fidelman, who engineered and mixed Death Magnetic.
The album was Metallica’s sixth consecutive studio album to debut at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling 291,000 album-equivalent units in its first week, and topping the charts in 57 countries. Having this album number one marked the second time in history that any band of any genre would have six consecutive albums debut at number one, following only Dave Matthews Band.
Metallica released the first single from the album, 'Hardwired', that same day; those who pre-ordered the album through the band's official website received an instant download of the song. NOBODY could ever accuse Metallica of mellowing with age. Despite the metal giants’ individual members having all passed 50 since 2008’s Death Magnetic, there’s nothing subtle about their 10th studio album Hardwired…To Self Destruct.
The opening title track rockets out of the blocks in a fury of driving guitar and thrashing drums and the pace rarely slackens across the 12 tracks and two discs. Like Death Magnetic, Hardwired resembles ‘80s thrash metal Metallica, rather then their more melodic hard rock ‘90s years. Having said that, Now That We’re Dead features one of James Hetfield’s most tuneful choruses since Reload. Hardwired is bloated in parts and continually rehashes Metallica’s past glories, but long-term fans will devour the record with glee.
